Prerequisites for checking cooling output of air conditioner > < Removing and installing left and right air ducts at drive batteryA2
Checking cooling output of air conditioner (not for vehicles with a high-voltage system)
Checking cooling output of air conditioner (not for vehicles with a high-voltage system)
Vehicles with mechanically driven air conditioner compressor only, not for vehicles with a high-voltage system (hybrid vehicles)
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051/- or vehicle diagnostic and service information system -VAS 5052- with the corresponding connecting cable.
t  Commercially available thermometer (for temperature measurement; if applicable use thermometer with 2 probes for simultaneous measurement of temperature e.g. on right and left)
t  Prerequisites for checking cooling output of air conditioner → Chapter
t  Checking cooling output → Chapter
  Note
t  As of Model Year 2010 a start/stop system will be available as an optional extra for this vehicle in conjunction with certain engines. The stop function may be inhibited by the operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- depending on its setting. If „Defrost“ mode has been set for example, no stop function is possible or the stop function is terminated and the engine started as soon as this mode is selected. This also applies if the difference between the set specified temperature and the measured actual temperature exceeds a certain value in heating and cooling mode → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Depending on equipment and model, vehicles with a start/stop system may be fitted with an additional coolant circulation pump -V50- (coolant pump -V36-) for the Stop function → Chapter, → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr.19 and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Depending on the vehicle model, -V50- (-V36-) is actuated not only with the „Stop function“ active but also with the engine running e.g. with „warm“ temperature setting on the air conditioner operating and display unit, Climatronic control unit -J255- („HI“ display on air conditioner operating and display unit and Multi Media Interface). -V50- (-V36-) is then actuated to assist the engine coolant pump → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  The design of the coolant circulation pump -V50- (coolant pump -V36-) and pump actuation differ depending on the vehicle model and production period. As of Model Year 2012 and depending on the engine, the pumps fitted as of the start of production and actuated by way of a 500 hertz signal (500 pulses per second) are gradually being replaced by pumps actuated by way of a 100 hertz signal. The pumps actuated by way of a 100 hertz signal additionally feature a diagnostic function and are generally actuated by way of the corresponding engine control unit. Attention is therefore to be paid to correct assignment (only the assigned pump can ever be actuated) → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051, → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations and → Electronic parts catalogue
t  As of Model Year 2012 and depending on the vehicle model, modified fresh air blower control units -J126- (and fresh air blowers -V2-, air conditioner operating and display units, Climatronic control unit -J255-, evaporators, expansion valves, control motors and air conditioning units are gradually to be introduced → Electronic parts catalogue and → "Guided fault-finding" function of vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051. Heed the notes on these components → Chapter „Components of air conditioning unit and air intake box with Basic type“
t  As of the start of production until conversion from Model Year 2012 onwards, evaporators with a width (block depth) of approx. 40 mm were fitted (air conditioning unit with part number „8K_ 820 005“). As of Model Year 2012 and depending on the vehicle model, evaporators with a width (block depth) of approx. 50 mm are to be gradually introduced (air conditioning unit with part number „8T_ 820 005“). Pay attention to correct assignment of the expansion valve to the evaporator (different versions) → Electronic parts catalogue.
