Power Steering Gear Components

Power steering gear, assembly

Note:  Do not weld or straighten steering components. Illustration shows S4 4.2 (non-U.S. model) with slight deviations from the USA/Canada
S4/S6 models.

1. Steering gear

After installing, place steering wheel spoke in horizontal position and fasten
Gear ratio: 18.9:1
After replacing, adjust toe

CAUTION:  The wheels must be turned to the straight-ahead position before removing the steering gear and steering wheel This ensures that the
airbag spiral spring in the steering wheel will not be damaged.

2. Collar screws (M10)

When replacing, use only original equipment

3. Washer

Thickness: 3 mm

4. Wheelhousing

5. Self-locking flanged nut

Improved mounting parts installed on vehicles from VIN ...PN 050 668 (1993 m.y.) and later
Always replace; install improved mounting parts, including washers
Tightening torque with improved mounting parts:
35 Nm (26 ft lb)

6. Hex bolt 40 Nm (30 ft lb)

7. Steering damper

Can be replaced with steering gear installed
To remove, remove hex bolt -6- and nut -18-
To check, remove from bracket on right wheel housing
Steering damper, checking: piston rod must move with uniform tension and with no jerking over the entire stroke. If necessary compare with new
