Safety rules for working on vehicles with Autogas systems (CNG)
Extract from the Safety Regulations for Vehicle Maintenance ZH 1/454 HVBG (Main Committee of German Trade
Associations).
These rules and regulations are applicable to LPG (Liquid Petroleum Gas) and CNG (Compressed Natural Gas)
vehicles.
5.24 Work on vehicles with Autogas systems
5.24.1
The contractor must ensure that vehicles with Autogas systems are only maintained by insured staff who
have received training in the handling and operation of Autogas systems.*
* refer to training program issued by BMW Service Training Center.
5.24.2
Vehicles with Autogas systems parked on workshop premises must be parked in a clearly visible position
with a sign identifying them as gas-driven vehicles.*
* This only applies to LPG vehicles.
5.24.3
On vehicles with an Autogas system, the extraction valves must be closed before the start of maintenance
work.
5.24.4
Once the extraction valves have been closed, the extraction lines must be drained by running the car on
Autogas.
The extraction lines are adequately drained once the engine finally cuts out after running at idle speed for several
minutes.*
* refer to Repair Instructions - draining the CNG system.
5.24.5
Vehicles with Autogas systems can be treated like petrol-driven cars once
-the extraction valves are closed
-the extraction lines are drained
and
-the Autogas tank is no longer able to take temperatures in excess of 60
°
C.
5.24.6
Vehicles with Autogas systems whose extraction valves have not been closed and whose extraction lines
have not been emptied can only be parked in locations
-which are above surrounding ground level
-in which at least 3 changes of air are available per hour
and
-which, in a radius of 3 m from the extraction valve connection point of the
Autogas tank, do not have any holes in the ground, drains, shafts, unventilated inspection pits or similar items.*
* This only applies to LPG vehicles.
5.24.7
If Autogas tanks have to be emptied, the extraction valve must be connected to a blow-off line. Autogas must
be vented to atmosphere through the exhaust line to prevent it from flowing into depressions, channels, drains,
basements or rooms at lower levels or confined spaces.*
This is achieved if the rooms located below ground level are at least 10 metres away from the exhaust line.*
* This only applies to LPG vehicles.
