Replacing all connecting-rod bearings (M51)
Note:
pistons romoved
In series production, different bearing versions are fitted for the
"Low Version" and the "High Version".
"Low Version" (85 kW):
Normal bearing shells.
"High Version" (105 kW):
Connecting-rod bearing cover - normal bearing shell.
At connecting-rod end- more wear-resistant bearing shell (Sputter
bearing)
The more wear-resistant bearing shell is identified by an
embossed "S" on the outside face of the bearing.
The BMW Parts Service now only offers parts for the "High
Version".
This version should be fitted when replacing items in both engine
variants.
On each connecting rod, irrespective of the colour marking on the
connecting-rod shaft, fit one red and one blue bearing shell.
