Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair
Rear
REAR HUB AND/OR BEARINGS
REMOVAL PROCEDURE

J 8001 Dial Indicator Set

J 26900-13 Magnetic Base
1. Raise and support the vehicle.
2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly from the vehicle. Refer to TIRE AND WHEEL REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION in TIRES AND
WHEELS.
3. Remove the brake drum. Refer to BRAKE DRUM REPLACEMENT in DRUM BRAKES.
4. Inspect the axle hub bearing end play (backlash) using J 8001 and J 26900-13. If the bearing end play exceeds 0.05 mm (0.002 in), replace the rear
axle hub and bearing.
5. Inspect the axle hub surface deviation outside the hub bolt using J 8001 and J 26900-13. If the axle hub surface deviation exceeds 0.07 mm
(0.0028 in), replace the rear axle hub and bearing.
6. Remove one bolt and disconnect the wheel speed sensor (if equipped).
7. Remove the four axle hub and rear suspension knuckle mounting bolts.
8. Remove the axle hub from the vehicle.
9. Remove the O-ring from the backing plate.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Coat the new O-ring with GCLB grease.
2. Install a new O-ring seal to the backing plate.
NOTICE: Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that
