SUBJECT:
Knocking Sound In Engine Compartment At Idle (Duty Cycle Purge)

OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves checking if TSB 25-01-98 was completed and selectively erasing and reprogramming the powertrain control module (PCM) with
new software (calibration changes 98cal12).

NOTE:

THIS INFORMATION APPLIES TO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A 5.2L FEDERAL EMISSIONS PACKAGE (SALES CODE NAA) AND
AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION BUILT PRIOR TO MAY 15, 1998 (MDH 0515XX).

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
Knocking like sounds heard coming from the engine compartment when the vehicle is stopped at idle. The noise may be mis-interpreted as valve train or
engine noise. This noise is most noticeable when the vehicle is at idle and could be caused by the Duty Cycle Purge solenoid. This noise is heard in the
passenger compartment and in the engine compartment with the hood open.

DIAGNOSIS:
Using the Mopar Diagnostic System (MDS/MDS2) and or the Diagnostic Scan Tool (DRB III(R)) with the appropriate Diagnostic Procedures Manual,
verify all engine/transmission systems are functioning as designed. If Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC's) are present, record them on the repair order and
repair as necessary before proceeding further with this bulletin. If no DTC's are present, verify that the noise is originating from the Duty Cycle Purge
Solenoid. If it is, verify purge solenoid bracket and mounting are correct as outlined in TSB 25-01-98. After checking for TSB 25-01-98 applicability,
perform the Repair Procedure.

NOTE:

WHENEVER A POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) IS REPLACED DUE TO FAILURE, THE SOFTWARE OF THE
REPLACEMENT CONTROLLER MUST BE VERIFIED FOR THE LATEST REVISION LEVEL. USE THE FLASH PROCEDURE TO
UPDATE REPLACED CONTROLLERS AS NECESSARY.

THE MDS1/MDS2 AND DRB III(R) ARE REQUIRED TO PERFORM PART OF THIS REPAIR. IF USING THE MDS1 AND DRB III(R) THE
MDS MUST BE OPERATING AT RELEASE 21 OR HIGHER AND TIL CD RELEASE 1180 OR HIGHER MUST BE INSTALLED. IF USING
THE MDS2 AND DRB III(R) THE SYSTEM MUST BE OPERATING AT CIS CD2030 OR HIGHER.
