Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use an Allen key to stop the piston rod from turning.
    Loosen the left-hand suspension strut locknut five turns (right-hand side shown).

  1. Loosen the halfshaft stub nut (right-hand side shown).
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Remove the left-hand front wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
  1. Remove the halfshaft stub nut.

  1. Remove the fender splash shields (right-hand side shown).

  1. Loosen the subframe retaining bolts.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the boot and ABS sensor ring.
    Disconnect the left-hand suspension (right-hand side shown).
    • Disconnect the ABS wiring harness bracket from the strut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
    Remove the left-hand halfshaft from the hub (right-hand side shown).
Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Collect escaping oil.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Only if the intermediate shaft has already been removed.
    Using the special tool, disconnect the left-hand halfshaft.
All Vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Collect escaping oil. Close off the transaxle opening with a Plug.
    Using Suitable Lever, remove the left-hand halfshaft (vehicle with manual transaxle shown).

Installation

All Vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Renew self-locking nuts and snap rings.
    Halfshaft location.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the oil seal.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
    Install the LH halfshaft.
    • Check that the snap ring engages correctly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:To avoid to damage the halfshaft joints and boots, do not bend the inner halfshaft joint by more than 18 degrees, the outer one by not more than 45 degrees.
    Using the special tool, install the halfshaft to the hub.
  1. Install the halfshaft stub nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage boot and ABS sensor ring.
    Install the left-hand suspension.
    • Attach the ABS wiring harness bracket to the strut.

  1. Tighten the subframe retaining bolts.

  1. Install the fender splash shields (right-hand side shown).
  1. Install the left-hand front wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
Vehicles with manual transaxle
  1. Check the transmission fluid level and fill with Manual Transmission Fluidas necessary. For additional information, refer to Section  308-03 Manual Transmission/Transaxle.
All Vehicles
  1. Install the front wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Tighten the halfshaft stub nut.

  1. Tighten the left-hand suspension strut locknut (right-hand side shown).
Vehicles with automatic transaxle
  1. Fill the automatic transaxle with Automatic Transmission FluidFor additional information, refer to Section  307-01 Automatic Transmission/Transaxle.
