Power Brake Actuation - Brake Booster—2.5L Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Removal

All Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  1. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section  303-12B .
  1. Remove the air cleaner outlet tube. For additional information, refer to Section  303-12B .
  1. Remove the master cylinder. For additional information, refer to Section  206-06 Hydraulic Brake Actuation.

  1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the brake booster.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Left - hand drive shown, right - hand drive similar.
    Remove the brake booster actuator rod retaining clip.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Remove the automatic transaxle fluid dipstick.
Left-hand drive vehicles

  1. Detach the brake booster.
Right-hand drive vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not pull on the accelerator or speed control cables (if equipped).
    Detach the brake booster.

  1. Detach the brake booster (continued).
    1. Remove the clip.
    1. Remove the pin.
All Vehicles

  1. Follow the master cylinder brake tubes back to the hydraulic control unit and remove the tubes, (brake booster shown removed for clarity).

  1. Detach the engine wiring harness electrical connector.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Detach the gear selector cable and bracket.
All Vehicles

  1. Disconnect the starter motor power cable.
  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may be ignited. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Fuel in the fuel system remains under high pressure even when the engine is not running.
    Depressurize the fuel system. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Disconnect the fuel flow and return tubes. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
  1. Remove the brake booster from the vehicle.

Installation

NOTE:
NOTE:After installation, bleed the brake system. For additional information, refer to Section  206-00 Brake System - General Information.
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the brake booster actuator rod is correctly positioned through the bulkhead rubber boot.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
