Steering Column Switches - Ignition Switch Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Electrical hand drill
Stud extractor

Removal

Vehicles with 2.0L engine
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Remove the steering column lower shroud from the steering column.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine
  1. Remove the steering column. For additional information, refer to Section  211-04 Steering Column.

  1. Remove the passive anti-theft system (PATS) transceiver from the ignition switch assembly.

  1. Using a suitable electric hand drill and stud extractor remove the upper steering lock shield retaining bolts.

  1. Using a suitable electric hand drill and stud extractor remove the lower steering lock shield retaining bolt.
  1. Remove the steering lock shield.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the ignition switch.
    1. Remove the ignition switch retaining screws.
    1. Disconnect the ignition switch electrical connector.
    1. Detach the ignition switch electrical connector.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. Install the ignition switch.
    1. Install the ignition switch.
    1. Connect the ignition switch electrical connector.
Vehicles with 2.5L engine

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:When installing the steering column lock shield make sure that no cables are trapped or damaged.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The ignition lock shield retaining bolts are designed to shear at the specified torque.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The steering lock shield retaining bolts must be hand started before tightening with a power tool.
    Install the steering lock shield.

  1. Install the PATS transceiver to the ignition switch assembly.
  1. Install the steering column. For additional information, refer to Section  211-04 Steering Column.
Vehicles with 2.0L engine

  1. Install the steering column lower shroud to the steering column.
  1. Connect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
