Clutch Controls - Clutch Master Cylinder Cougar 1999 (08/1998-01/2001)
Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. Remove the instrument panel lower panel.

  1. Disconnect the central junction box (CJB) electrical connector.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the upper part of the CJB.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors from the lower part of the CJB.
  1. Remove the central junction box (CJB).
    • Remove the four nuts.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not let brake fluid get onto the skin or into the eyes. If brake fluid comes into contact with the skin or eyes, rinse the affected places immediately with water. Failure to follow this instructions will result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Brake fluid will escape when the pipes are disconnected.
    Disconnect the pipes from the clutch master cylinder.
    1. Disconnect the supply line.
    1. Remove the retaining clip.
    1. Disconnect the high-pressure line.

  1. Remove the clutch master cylinder.
    1. Remove the retaining clip.
    1. Remove the nuts.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:When the battery has been disconnected and reconnected, some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
  1. Bleed the hydraulic clutch system. For additional information, refer to Section  308-00 Manual Transmission/Transaxle and Clutch - General Information.
