Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:The backup power supply energy must be depleted before any air bag component repair is carried out. To deplete backup power supply energy, first disconnect the battery ground cable, then disconnect the positive battery cable and wait one minute to avoid accidental deployment and personal injury. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    Disconnect the battery ground cable.
  1. Remove the air cleaner. For additional information, refer to Section  303-12B .

  1. Disconnect the battery positive cable electrical connector from the distributor plate.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor solenoid electrical connector and detach the battery positive cable.

  1. Detach the positive battery cable.
    • Cut the cable tie.

  1. Remove the air cleaner bracket.

  1. Position the shift cable to one side.

  1. Disconnect the starter motor electrical connectors.
  1. Remove the ignition coil. For additional information, refer to Section  303-07A Engine Ignition / 303-07B Engine Ignition.

  1. Remove the shorting bar cover.
    1. Depress the tangs.
    1. Remove the shorting bar cover.

  1. Disconnect the battery positive cable.
  1. Remove the battery positive cable.

Installation

NOTE:
NOTE:When the battery is disconnected and reconnected some abnormal drive symptoms may occur while the vehicle relearns its adaptive strategy. The vehicle may need to be driven 16 km (10 miles) or more to relearn the strategy.

  1. To install, reverse the removal procedure.
