Remove the parking brake control boot. | | -
Lower the parking brake control lever and loosen the adjustment nut. | | -
Remove the wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation). | Vehicles with anti-lock brakes | -
Detach the wheel speed sensor from the backing plate. | All vehicles | -
CAUTION:Do not remove the brake drum by means of the hub retaining nut. Remove the brake drum and hub assembly. | | -
Remove the brake shoe hold down springs. | | -
CAUTION:Do not damage the wheel cylinder boots. NOTE:Hold the wheel cylinder pistons in place with an rubber band. Detach the brake shoes from the wheel cylinder. | | -
Detach the brake shoes from the anchor block. | Vehicles without anti-lock brakes built up to 01/2000 | -
Disconnect the parking brake cable. - Push the lever inwards.
- Disconnect the cable.

Remove the brake shoe return springs. - Remove the lower spring.
- Remove the upper spring.

Disengage the primary shoe from the strut support. - Pull the primary shoe away from the support.
- Disengage the shoe.

CAUTION:The strut support spring is under tension. Detach the secondary shoe from the strut support. - Twist the shoe through 90 degrees.
- Detach the spring.
| Vehicles without anti-lock brakes built 02/2000 onwards | -
Disconnect the parking brake cable (lower return spring shown removed for clarity). | | -
Remove the brake shoe return and strut support springs. - Remove the lower spring.
- Remove the strut support spring.
- Remove the upper spring.

Disengage the secondary shoe from the strut support. | | -
Detach the primary shoe from the strut support. - Rotate the support strut through 90 degrees.
- Release the primary shoe.
| Vehicles with anti-lock brakes | -
Remove the brake shoe return springs. | | -
Remove the brake shoe adjuster from the brake shoes. | | -
Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake shoe. | All vehicles Installation | -
NOTE:Make sure that the brake shoe adjuster is fully released. To Install, reverse the removal procedure. - Apply grease to the brake shoe adjuster strut.
- Clean the backing plate and apply silicon dielectric compound to the brake shoe contact points.
