Removal and Installation

Removal

All vehicles

  1. Remove the parking brake control boot.

  1. Lower the parking brake control lever and loosen the adjustment nut.
  1. Remove the wheel and tire.
    For additional information, refer to: Wheel and Tire (204-04 Wheels and Tires, Removal and Installation).
Vehicles with anti-lock brakes

  1. Detach the wheel speed sensor from the backing plate.
All vehicles

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not remove the brake drum by means of the hub retaining nut.
    Remove the brake drum and hub assembly.

  1. Remove the brake shoe hold down springs.
    • Remove the pins.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the wheel cylinder boots.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Hold the wheel cylinder pistons in place with an rubber band.
    Detach the brake shoes from the wheel cylinder.

  1. Detach the brake shoes from the anchor block.
Vehicles without anti-lock brakes built up to 01/2000

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable.
    1. Push the lever inwards.
    1. Disconnect the cable.

  1. Remove the brake shoe return springs.
    1. Remove the lower spring.
    1. Remove the upper spring.

  1. Disengage the primary shoe from the strut support.
    1. Pull the primary shoe away from the support.
    1. Disengage the shoe.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The strut support spring is under tension.
    Detach the secondary shoe from the strut support.
    1. Twist the shoe through 90 degrees.
    1. Detach the spring.
Vehicles without anti-lock brakes built 02/2000 onwards

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable (lower return spring shown removed for clarity).

  1. Remove the brake shoe return and strut support springs.
    1. Remove the lower spring.
    1. Remove the strut support spring.
    1. Remove the upper spring.

  1. Disengage the secondary shoe from the strut support.

  1. Detach the primary shoe from the strut support.
    1. Rotate the support strut through 90 degrees.
    1. Release the primary shoe.
Vehicles with anti-lock brakes

  1. Remove the brake shoe return springs.

  1. Remove the brake shoe adjuster from the brake shoes.

  1. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the brake shoe.
All vehicles
  1. Remove the brake shoes.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the brake shoe adjuster is fully released.
    To Install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Apply grease to the brake shoe adjuster strut.
    • Clean the backing plate and apply silicon dielectric compound to the brake shoe contact points.
  1. Adjust the parking brake cable.
