Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Separator, ball joint

Removal

All Vehicles
  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable.

  1. From inside the passenger compartment, remove the flexible coupling to pinion shaft pinch bolt.

  1. From inside the passenger compartment slacken the flexible coupling to column shaft pinch bolt.
  1. Slacken the wheel nuts, raise the vehicle and remove the front road wheels.

  1. Remove the track rod end locknuts.
    1. Hold the ball joint studs with an Allen key.
    1. Remove the locknuts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:When the track rod ends are separated from the spindle carriers the ball joint seals should be wrapped in a cloth to protect them.
    Disconnect the track rod end ball joints from the spindle carriers.
  1. Remove the exhaust catalyst. For additional information, refer to Section  309-00 Exhaust System.
Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Disconnect the gearshift linkage.
Vehicles with automatic transaxle

  1. Disconnect the gearshift linkage.
    1. Unclip the linkage retaining clip.
    1. Remove the linkage retaining clip.
    1. Remove the cable retaining clip.
    1. Disengage the cable.

  1. Remove the roll restrictor to transmission retaining bolt.

  1. Unclip the ABS sensor cables from the crossmember.
  1. Support the crossmember assembly.

  1. Remove the crossmember assembly retaining bolts.

  1. Lower the crossmember assembly to gain access to the steering gear retaining nuts and bolts.

  1. Remove the pinion shaft body seal.

  1. Remove the steering gear retaining nuts and bolts.

  1. Remove the steering gear.

Installation

All Vehicles

  1. Install the steering gear.

  1. Install the crossmember.

  1. Install the roll restrictor.
Vehicles with manual transaxle

  1. Install the gearshift linkage.

  1. Install the tie rods.

  1. Install the wheels.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the steering is in the straight ahead position.
    Install the upper steering coupling pinch bolt.

  1. Install the lower steering coupling pinch bolt.
