Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Range Selection Fiesta 1996 (08/1995-02/2002)
Description and Operation

P = Park

Transmission is immobilised - can only be selected when the vehicle is stationary.

R = Reverse

Can only be selected when the vehicle is stationary. If "R" is accidentally selected while the vehicle is moving forwards, a safety control valve prevents the frictional connection of the reverse clutch above a road speed of 10 km/h.

N = Neutral

There is no transmission of power to the front wheels.

D= Drive

Position for normal driving mode. Transmission ratio control is continuously variable and depends on accelerator pedal position. While the vehicle is being driven, the selector lever can be switched from "D" to "L" and vice versa.

L = Load gear

NOTE:
NOTE:Top speed may be reached in "D" and "L".

Should be selected for longer uphill climbs and downhill stretches (engine braking effect).

The engine can only be started in "P" and "N".
