Using the special tool, remove the taper roller bearings from the differential. - Attach the special tool.
- Remove both taper roller bearings using the special tool.
- Remove the speedometer drive pinion (vehicles built up to 08/1999). Remove the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) sensor ring (Vehicles built from 08/1999).

Remove the pinion gears. - Turn the pinion gears through 90 degrees in the differential cage and remove them.
- Remove and discard the snap ring. Remove the shaft using a suitable drift .
- Unscrew the eight bolts and evenly drive the spur gear off the differential.

NOTE:Do not lubricate the taper roller bearings. | | | -
NOTE:Replace the snap ring. Install the pinion gears. - Install the spur gear by evenly tightening the old bolts.
- Install the shaft using a suitable drift and install a new snap ring.
- Install the pinion gears and turn them through 90 degrees in the differential cage.

NOTE:Renew the spur gear bolts. NOTE:Do not rest on the differential lower taper roller bearing. NOTE:The speedometer drive wheel must engage in the cut-outs in the differential cage. Using the special tool, install the differential spur gear and taper roller bearings. - Install new the spur gear bolts and tighten working diagonally.
- Install the speedometer drive pinion (vehicles built up to 08/1999). Install the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) sensor ring (Vehicles built from 08/1999).
- Press on both taper roller bearings using the special tool and a suitable press.
