Diagnosis and Testing

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 417-04, for schematic and connector information.

Inspection and Checking

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually check the following electrical causes for the concern:

  1. Resolve any obvious causes or concerns found during the visual inspection before carrying out any further tests.

PINPOINT TEST A : DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS INOPERATIVE

NOTE:The dipped beam should be switched off during this check

Ignition switch in position II.

Check the DRL parking lamps and DRL dipped beam.

Is the DRL dipped beam inoperative?
Yes
DRL dipped beam inoperative: GO to A2.
No
DRL parking lamps inoperative: GO to Pinpoint Test C.
A2: CHECK FUSE F43 (CJB)

Ignition switch in position 0.

CHECK fuse F43 (CJB) (10 A).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F43 (10 A). If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A3: CHECK POWER SUPPLY TO FUSE F43 (CJB)

Connect fuse F43 (CJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F43 (10 A) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY break in circuit 15-LE39 (GN/WH), between soldered connection S401 and fuse F43 (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A4: CHECK THE VOLTAGE AT THE DRL RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect DRL relay from socket C229.
3
Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the DRL relay, socket C229, pin 5, circuit 14-LE39 (VT/WH), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F43 and the DRL relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A5: CHECK THE DRL RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Using a fused test cable (10 A) at the DRL relay, bridge socket C229, pin 3 circuit 14S-LE8 (VT) and pin 5, circuit 14-LE39 (VT/WH), CJB side.

Ignition switch in position II.

Check daytime running lamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
RENEW the DRL relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 14S-LE8 (VT/YE), between the DRL relay and fuse F29 (BJB), using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

PINPOINT TEST B : DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED OFF (PARKING LAMPS SWITCHED OFF)

Disconnect DRL relay from socket C229.

Check daytime running lamps.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
- The DRL dipped beam illuminates with full intensity: GO to B2.
- The DRL dipped beam illuminates with reduced intensity: LOCATE and RECTIFY short to battery voltage in circuit 14S-LE8 (VT), between the DRL relay and the series resistor using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
B2: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT CONDITION

Disconnect fuse F27 (BJB).

Disconnect fuse F29 (BJB).
3
Check daytime running lamps.

Does the left-hand DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage between fuse F27 (BJB) and the left-hand headlamp using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
- The right-hand DRL dipped beam illuminates: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits the series resistor and the right-hand headlamp using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- No DRL dipped beam illuminates: REFER to Section  417-01 Exterior Lighting.Headlamps
B3: NARROW DOWN THE LOCATION OF THE SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Connect DRL relay to socket C229.

Disconnect fuse F43 (CJB).
3
Check daytime running lamps.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in circuit 14-LE39 (VT/WH) between fuse F43 (CJB) and the DRL relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
B4: NARROW DOWN THE LOCATION OF THE SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Connect fuse F43 (CJB).

Disconnect DRL parking lamp relay from socket C87.
3
Check DRL dipped beam and DRL parking lamps.

Does the DRL dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
No
- DRL parking lamps illuminate: GO to B5.
- DRL parking lamps do not illuminate: GO to B6.
B5: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT CONDITION

Disconnect fuse F6 (CJB).

Disconnect fuse F7 (CJB).
3
Check the DRL parking lamps.

Do the left-hand DRL parking lamps illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S64 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
- Right-hand DRL parking lamps illuminate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S70 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- DRL parking lamps do not illuminate: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits between the DRL parking lamp relay and fuse F6/F7 (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
B6: CHECK THE DRL PARKING LAMP RELAY

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 1, circuit 29S-LE38 (OG/GN) / 29S-LE6 (OG/YE), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the DRL parking lamp relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
B7: CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

Disconnect multifunction switch from connector C65a.

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 1, circuit 29S-LE38 (OG/GN) / 29S-LE6 (OG/YE), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the multifunction switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
B8: CHECK GEM MODULE

Disconnect fuse F3 (CJB).
2
Disconnect fuse F8 (CJB).
3
Disconnect fuse F12 (CJB).
4
Disconnect fuse F18 (CJB).

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 1, circuit 29S-LE38 (OG/GN) / 29S-LE6 (OG/YE), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S930 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
CHECK the GEM module using WDS, RENEW if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
B9: CHECK THE IGNITION SWITCH

Connect DRL parking lamp relay to socket C87.
2
Disconnect ignition switch from connector C61.
3
Check daytime running lamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
No
RENEW the ignition switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
B10: CHECK SYSTEMS FOR SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE
1
Disconnect fuse F12 (CJB).
2
Disconnect fuse F13 (CJB).
3
Disconnect fuse F14 (CJB).
4
Disconnect fuse F18 (CJB).
5
Disconnect fuse F20 (CJB).
6
Check daytime running lamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S401 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
Re-insert the fuses and check the daytime running lamps after each fuse is inserted. If the daytime running lamps illuminate, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the system corresponding to the last fuse inserted, using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

PINPOINT TEST C : DRL PARKING LAMPS INOPERATIVE

Switch on the side lights.

Check the front parking lamps.

Do the front parking lamps illuminate?
Yes
No
REFER to Section  417-01 Exterior Lighting.Parking Lamps, Rear Lamp Assembly and License Plate Lamps.
C2: CHECK THE VOLTAGE SUPPLY OF THE DRL PARKING LAMP RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect DRL parking lamp relay from socket C87.
3
Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 4, circuit 15-LE6 (GN/YE) and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
RENEW the DRL parking lamp relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY break in circuit 15-LE6 (GN/YE), between soldered connection S401 and the DRL parking lamp relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

PINPOINT TEST D : DRL DIPPED BEAM IS INOPERATIVE; DRL PARKING LAMPS ILLUMINATE CONTINUOUSLY (WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED ON)

Disconnect DRL parking lamp relay from socket C87.

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 1, circuit 29S-LE38 (OG/GN) / 29S-LE6 (OG/YE), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the DRL parking lamp relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
D2: CHECK THE MULTIFUNCTION SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect multifunction switch from connector C65a.

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between the DRL parking lamp relay, socket C87, pin 1, circuit 29S-LE38 (OG/GN) / 29S-LE6 (OG/YE), CJB side and ground.

Does the meter display battery voltage?
Yes
No
RENEW the multifunction switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
D3: CHECK GEM MODULE

Disconnect fuse F3 (CJB).

Yes
LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to soldered connection S930 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
CHECK the GEM module using WDS, RENEW if necessary. CHECK the operation of the system.
