Adjust

All vehicles
  1. Remove the valve cover.
For additional information, refer to: Valve Cover (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, In-vehicle Repair).

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Note down each cylinder number and the valve clearances measured.
Using a suitable set of feeler gauges, measure the valve clearances.
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Only rotate the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation.
Rotate the crankshaft until each piston is at TDC and measure the valve clearances.
Vehicles built up to 01/2001

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Only carry out the following steps when the valve clearance(s) require adjustment.
For additional information, refer to: Specifications (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, Specifications).
    NOTE:
NOTE:Install the long bolts at the front.
    Attach the special tool.
    • Remove the outer bolts from the first and last camshaft bearing cap.
    • Attach the special tool with the depressor guide facing outwards.

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The cam of the valve concerned must face upwards.
    Attach the special tool.
    • Insert the depressor into the lever.

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The tappet groove must face the center of the engine.
    NOTE:
NOTE:Do not press the adjusting shim with the depressor.
    Remove the adjusting shim.
    1. Attach the depressor to the edge of the valve tappet and press down the tappet.
    1. Remove the adjusting shim.
  1. Determine the thickness of the adjusting shim using a micrometer.
  1. Choose a new adjusting shim.
    • Determine the thickness of the new adjusting shim: Thickness of adjusting shim (new) = valve clearance (measured) + thickness of adjusting shim (old) - thickness of adjusting shim (new). The thickness of the chosen adjustment shim must not be more than 0,03 mm different from the calculated value.
  1. Insert the new valve adjusting shim according to the previous step.

  1. Check the valve clearance; if necessary, adjust the valve clearance according to the previous steps.
  1. Carry out the steps for each cylinder on the inlet and exhaust sides respectively.

  1. Detach the special tool.
Vehicles built 01/2001 onwards
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Only carry out the following steps when the valve clearance(s) require adjustment.
For additional information, refer to: Specifications (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, Specifications).
    Remove the camshafts.
For additional information, refer to: Camshafts (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, In-vehicle Repair).
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The number on the valve tappet is the tappet thickness, however only the decimal digits are marked (for example 725 = 2.725).
Determine the valve tappet thickness required:
    1. Remove the valve tappet and read the thickness from the underside.
    1. Calculate the valve tappet thickness required:
    • Thickness of currently installed valve tappet, + the measured valve clearance, - the required valve clearance.
  1. Install the correct valve tappet.
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Do not install the timing belt before the valve clearances are correct.
    Install the camshafts.
For additional information, refer to: Camshafts (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, In-vehicle Repair).
  1. NOTE:
NOTE:Rotate the camshafts to measure the valve clearances.
Measure the valve clearances and repeat the procedure as necessary until all valve clearances are within the specified tolerance.
All vehicles
  1. Install the valve cover.
For additional information, refer to: Valve Cover (303-01A Engine - 1.4L/1.6L, In-vehicle Repair).
