Diagnosis and Testing

Refer to Wiring Diagrams Section 417-04, for schematic and connector information.

Inspection and Verification

  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of mechanical or electrical damage.

PINPOINT TEST A : THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE

A1: CHECK THE LOW BEAMS

Ignition switch in position II.

Turn the light switch to the LOW BEAM position.
3
Check the low beams.

Do the low beams illuminate?
Yes
No

A2: CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Daytime running lamps (DRL) relay C1012.

Measure the voltage between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
REPAIR the open circuit between fuse F22 and daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A3: CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY

Measure the voltage between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 1 and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
A4: CHECK GROUND CONNECTION OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY

Ignition switch in position 0.

Measure the resistance between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 2 and ground.

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s) between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay and ground G1, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
A5: CHECK THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY

Connect a jumper wire at the daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, between pin 3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD) and pin 5, circuit(s) 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), 15S-DC19 (GN/BU).

Check the headlamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
INSTALL a new daytime running lamps (DRL) relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s), 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay and splice S120, by using the wiring diagrams. If necessary INSTALL a new daytime running lamps resistor. TEST the system for normal operation.
A6: CHECK THE LIGHT SWITCH

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Light switch C320.

Measure the resistance between light switch, connector C320, pin 4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), harness side and daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 1, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE).

Is the resistance less than 2 ohms?
Yes
CHECK the light switch according the Component Test:
REFER to: Headlamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing).
If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s) between light switch, connector C320, pin 4 and daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.

PINPOINT TEST B : THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ARE ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCH OFF

B2: CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY

Measure the voltage between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 1, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
INSTALL a new daytime running lamps (DRL) relay. TEST the system for normal operation.
B3: CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS (DRL) RELAY FOR SHORT TO POWER

Disconnect Light switch C320.

Measure the voltage between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 1, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
REPAIR the short to power, circuit(s) connected with the daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, pin 1, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B4: CHECK THE LIGHT SWITCH

Measure the voltage between light switch, connector C320, pin 8, circuit 15-LE29 (GN/BK) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
REPAIR the short to power, circuit(s) connected with fuse F61, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
CHECK the light switch according the Component Test:
REFER to: Headlamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing).
If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
B5: CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY OF DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS FOR SHORT TO POWER

Disconnect Fuse F19 (BJB).

Check the headlamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
REPAIR the short to power, circuit(s) 15S-LE8 (GN/RD) and 15S-DC19 (GN/BU), connected with the daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
B6: CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY OF PARKING LAMPS (DRL) FOR SHORT TO POWER

Connect Fuse F19 (BJB).

Disconnect Light switch C320.
3
Check the headlamps.

Do the daytime running lamps illuminate?
Yes
REPAIR the short to power, circuit(s) 15S-LE29 (GN/BK), connected with fuse F19, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
No

PINPOINT TEST C : THE PARKING LAMPS ARE INOPERATIVE WITH THE DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS ON

C1: DETERMINE THE CONDITION

Turn the light switch to the PARKING LIGHT position.

Check the parking lamps.

Do the parking lamps illuminate?
Yes
No
REFER to: Parking, Rear and License Lamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing).
C2: CHECK THE FUSE F19

Ignition switch in position 0.

CHECK Fuse F19 (BJB).

CHECK the fuse F19 (10 A).

Is the fuse OK?
Yes
No
INSTALL a new fuse F19 (10 A). If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and REPAIR the short circuit by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
C3: CHECK THE POWER SUPPLY OF FUSE F19

Connect Fuse F19 (BJB).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between fuse F19 (BJB) and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s) 15S-DC19 (GN/BU), between daytime running lamps (DRL) relay and fuse F19, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
C4: CHECK THE CIRCUIT TO LIGHT SWITCH FOR OPEN

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Light switch C320.

Disconnect Daytime running lamps (DRL) relay C1012.

Connect a jumper wire at the daytime running lamps (DRL) relay, socket C1012, between pin 3, circuit 30-LE7 (RD) and pin 5, circuit(s) 15S-LE8 (GN/RD), 15S-DC19 (GN/BU).

Ignition switch in position II.

Measure the voltage between light switch, connector C320, pin 15, circuit 15S-LE29 (GN/BK), harness side and ground.

Is battery voltage indicated?
Yes
CHECK the light switch according to the Component Test:
REFER to: Headlamps - Vehicles Built Up To: 08/2001 (417-01 Exterior Lighting, Diagnosis and Testing).
If necessary INSTALL a new one. TEST the system for normal operation.
No
REPAIR the open circuit(s), 15S-LE29 (GN/BK), between fuse F19 (BJB) and light switch, by using the wiring diagrams. TEST the system for normal operation.
