  1. Remove the cylinder head.
    For additional information, refer to: Cylinder Head (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), In-vehicle Repair).

2. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s).

3. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

Removal Details

Item 1 : Valve tappets

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Set the valve tappets aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.

Item 2 : Valve collets

NOTE:
NOTE:Place wooden wedges in the combustion chamber recesses of the cylinder head to hold the valves in place during removal.

  1. Install the special tools.
  1. Compress the valve spring using the special tool.
  1. Using the special tools, remove the valve collets.

Item 3 : Valve spring retainers

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Set the valve spring retainers aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.

Item 4 : Valve springs

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Set the valve springs aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.

Item 5 : Valve stem seal

  1. Using the special tool, remove the valve stem seals.

Item 6 : Intake valves

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Set the valves aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.

Item 7 : Exhaust valves

CAUTION:
CAUTION:Set the valves aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.

Installation Details

Item 7 : Exhaust valves

NOTE:
NOTE:Recommendations of grinding paste manufacturer.
  1. Regrind the valves using grinding paste.
  1. Clean all components thoroughly.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Place wooden wedges in the combustion chamber recesses of the cylinder head to hold the valves in place during installation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Coat the valve stem with clean engine oil.
    Install the valves.

Item 6 : Intake valves

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Recommendations of grinding paste manufacturer.
    Regrind the valves using grinding paste.
  1. Clean all components thoroughly.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Place wooden wedges in the combustion chamber recesses of the cylinder head to hold the valves in place during installation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Coat the valve stem with clean engine oil.
    Install the valves.

Item 5 : Valve stem seal

  1. Install a protective sleeve over the valve collet groove (valve shown removed for clarity).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The valve stem seals for the inlet valves are green, and those for the exhaust valves are brown.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new valve stem seals.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Coat the valve stem seals with clean engine oil.
    Using the special tool, install the valve stem seals.
  1. Remove the valve stem protective sleeve.
