  1. Remove the timing belt.
    For additional information, refer to: Timing Belt - Vehicles Built Up To: 04/2005 (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), In-vehicle Repair) /

  1. Remove the valve cover.
    For additional information, refer to: Valve Cover (303-01B Engine - 1.6L Duratec-16V Ti-VCT (Sigma), In-vehicle Repair).

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use an open-ended wrench to hold the camshafts by the hexagon to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    Remove the blanking plugs.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Counterhold the camshafts at the hexagon using an open-ended spanner to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    Remove the VCT elements.

5. Remove the components in the order indicated in the following illustration(s) and table(s).

6. To install, reverse the removal procedure.

NOTE:
NOTE:Do not yet tighten the VCT elements when installing. Ensure that the VCT elements can still be moved freely on the camshafts.
  1. Adjust the valve clearances.

Removal Details

Item 1 : Bolts, camshaft bearing caps

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Set the camshaft bearing caps aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Only remove the CMP sensor rings after removal of the camshafts.
    Remove the camshaft bearing caps and VCT bridge.
    • Unscrew the camshaft bearing cap and VCT bridge bolts one turn at a time until the camshaft is released.

Installation Details

Item 4 : Camshafts

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Coat the bearing surfaces of the camshaft with clean engine oil prior to installation.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshafts in their original installation position.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshafts so that none of the cams are at full lift.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install the CMP sensor rings prior to installation of the camshafts.
    Fit the camshafts in the installation position.

Item 3 : VCT bridge

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install a new O-ring in the oil supply bore of the cylinder head for the VCT bridge.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Coat the VCT bridge bearing surfaces with clean engine oil prior to installation.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Bolt length: VCT bridge, inner M7 x 51 mm, outer M7 x 38 mm.
    Apply sealer to the areas of the VCT bridge shown (bead diameter: 2 mm).
    • Fit the VCT bridge in the installation position.

Item 1 : Bolts, camshaft bearing caps

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Coat the camshaft bearing cap bearing surfaces with clean engine oil prior to installation.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshaft bearing caps in their original installation positions.
    Install the camshaft bearing caps.
    • Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts and VCT bridge bolts in the sequence shown.
    • Tighten the bolts evenly half a turn at a time until the camshaft bearing caps and the VCT bridge make contact with the cylinder head.
    • Bolts 1-16 : 7 Nm
    • Bolts 17-20 : 10 Nm
    • Bolts 1-16 : 45°
    • Bolts 17+19 : 70°
    • Bolts 18+20 : 53°

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new camshaft seals.
    Install the camshaft seals using the special tool.

  1. Rotate the camshafts and install the special tool.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the VCT element retaining bolts at this stage.
    Install the VCT elements.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the timing mark on each VCT element is at the 12 o´clock position.
    Using the special tool, tighten the VCT element retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:With the aid of another technician, make sure that the camshafts are held in position.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Counterhold the camshafts at the hexagon using an open-ended spanner to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    Tighten the VCT element retaining bolts.

  1. Install the special tool and check the valve timing.
    • If necessary, Loosen the VCT elements and correct the valve timing following the previous steps.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:With the aid of another technician, make sure that the camshafts are held in position.
    WARNING:
    WARNING:Use an open-ended wrench to hold the camshafts by the hexagon to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Inspect the blanking plug gasket. If necessary, install a new blanking plug.
    Install the blanking plugs.
