Diagnosis and Testing

Worldwide Diagnostic System (WDS)
NOTE:
NOTE:To prevent the unnecessary installation of a new torque converter all diagnostic procedures must be followed before installing a new torque converter. Only after a complete diagnostic evaluation should the decision be made to install a new torque converter.
  1. Carry out the torque converter preliminary inspection,
    REFER to: Preliminary Inspection (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
  1. Carry out the torque converter Diagnostic Procedures.
    1. Run on-board diagnostics, REFER to WDS.
      • 1. Repair all non-transaxle related diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) first.

    1. Carry out the transmission line pressure test,
      REFER to: Special Testing Procedures (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
    1. Carry out the transmission stall speed test,
      REFER to: Special Testing Procedures (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
    1. Carry out a diagnosis by symptom,
      REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
      • 1. Use the index to locate the appropriate routine that best describes the symptom(s). The routine will list all possible components which may cause or contribute to the symptom. Check each component listed; diagnose and repair as necessary before installing a new torque converter.

  1. Carry out the Torque Converter Operation Test; REFER to Torque Converter Operation Test in this procedure.

Torque Converter Operation Test

  1. Run on-board diagnostics, REFER to WDS. Check the DTCs,
    REFER to: Diagnostic Trouble Code Charts (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
  1. Bring the engine and transaxle up to normal operating temperature.
  1. When normal operating temperature has been reached, maintain a constant vehicle speed of approximately 80 km/h (50 mph) and tap the brake pedal with the left foot.
  1. The engine speed should increase when the brake pedal is tapped and decrease approximately 5 seconds later. If this does not occur, REFER to Torque Converter Operation Concerns.

  1. If the vehicle stalls in "D" (DRIVE) at engine idle speed with vehicle at a stop, move the selector lever to manual 1 position. If the vehicle stalls again, REFER to Torque Converter Operation Concerns.
    REFER to: Diagnosis By Symptom (307-01A Automatic Transmission/Transaxle - Vehicles With: 4-Speed Automatic Transmission (4F27E), Diagnosis and Testing).
    Repair as necessary. TEST for normal operation.
