Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Installer, Oil Seal

Removal

  1. Loosen the parking brake cable.
  1. Loosen the wheel nuts.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Remove the wheel.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If the dust cap is damaged during removal a new dust cap must be installed.
    Remove the dust cap.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use a socket to remove the wheel hub retaining nut to prevent damage.
    Remove the wheel hub retaining nut.

  1. Remove the wheel hub and brake drum assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Take care not to damage the wheel hub bore when removing the wheel hub seal.
    Remove the wheel hub seal.

  1. Remove the bearings.

  1. Using a suitable internal extractor, remove the inner bearing cup.

  1. Using a suitable internal extractor, remove the outer bearing cup.
  1. Thoroughly clean the wheel hub and brake drum assembly.

Installation

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The tapered self-setting roller type rear bearings run in matched cups, (cups and bearings must be from the same supplier).
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The bearings are self-setting on assembly and therefore require no subsequent service adjustment.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:When installing the new cups make sure that the cups abut their respective shoulders.
    Install the new bearing cups.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Grease the bearing before fitting.
    Install the new inner bearing.

  1. Install a new wheel hub seal.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Grease the bearing before installing.
    Install the new outer bearing.
  1. Install the wheel hub and brake drum assembly.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Use a socket to install the wheel hub retaining nut to prevent damage.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Once tightened, the wheel hub retaining nut must not be disturbed. If the torque needs to be checked the nut must be loosened by two full turns and re-tightened.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Rotate the wheel hub when tightening the wheel hub retaining nut.
    Install the wheel hub retaining nut.
  1. Install the dust cap.

  1. Install the wheel.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Adjust the parking brake cable. For additional information, refer to Section  206-05 Parking Brake and Actuation.
