Removal and Installation

Removal

  1. Remove the steering gear.
    For additional information, refer to Steering Gear in this section.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the pinion shaft or oil seal housing is not damaged and no pieces of the seal enter the steering gear.
    Using the special tool, make a hole into the dust cap approximately 3 mm from the outer edge.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the self-tapping screw is not inserted more than 2 mm and no pieces of the seal enter the steering gear.
    Using a self-taping screw, remove the dust cap.
    1. Insert the self tapping screw.
    1. Ease the dust cap upwards.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Remove the grease with lint free paper.
    Remove the circlip.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the pinion bearing underneath the pinion seal is not damaged by the punch and no pieces of the pinion seal enter the steering gear.
    Using the special tool, make a hole into the pinion oil seal steel cage approximately 3 mm from the outer edge.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the pinion shaft or oil seal housing is not damaged, and no pieces of the seal are left inside the steering gear.
    Using the special tool, remove the oil seal.
    • Insert a self-tapping screw into the seal no more than 3 mm and ease out the seal.

Installation

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the oil seal is only installed to the minimum depth in the oil seal housing, which allows correct location of the circlip into the retaining groove. Make sure the oil seal housing and pinion shaft are thoroughly cleaned with lint free paper. Examine the pinion shaft for signs of pitting, scoring, wear or corrosion.
    Using the special tool, install a new oil seal.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure the circlip is correctly located.
    Install the circlip.
    • Coat the oil seal and circlip with grease.

  1. Using the special tool, install a new dust cap.
  1. Install the steering gear.
