Removal

  1. Remove the camshaft timing belt.
For additional information, refer to Timing belt in this section.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Detach the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper from the flange.

  1. Remove the vibration damper flange.

  1. Remove the injection pump timing belt.
    • Loosen the bolt of the timing belt tensioner and slacken the timing belt.
    • Tighten the bolt of the timing belt tensioner.
    • Take off the timing belt.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Only fit the expanding collet.
Pull off the crankshaft timing pulley.
    1. Fit the expanding collet.
    1. Withdraw the expanding collet as far as the stop.

  1. Pull off the crankshaft timing pulley (continued).
    • Screw in the spindle and pull off the crankshaft timing pulley.

  1. Fit the aligner/installer.
    • Screw in the bolt of the vibration damper flange.
      NOTE:
NOTE:Make sure the flat side of the aligner/installer is correctly positioned.
    • Attach the aligner/installer.
    • Punch four starter holes with a drift and screw in the self-tapping screws.

  1. Remove the crankshaft front oil seal using the bolt of the vibration damper flange.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The flat side of the aligner/installer faces the auxiliary shaft seal. Fit the oil seal without lubrication.
Fit the crankshaft front seal using the bolt of the vibration damper flange.

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:Carry out step 2 immediately after step 1 to prevent the oil seal from contracting.
    NOTE:
NOTE:Make sure that the O-ring in the timing pulley is in perfect condition. It must be possible to insert the roll pin into the crankshaft bore.
    Fit the crankshaft timing pulley.
      CAUTION:
CAUTION:Do not lubricate the crankshaft spigot with engine oil.
    • Lubricate the O-ring with engine oil .
    • Carefully slide on the timing pulley as far as its stop.

  1. Fit the vibration damper flange.
    • Stage 1: 150 Nm
    • Stage 2: -90 degrees
    • Stage 3: 120 Nm
    • Stage 4: 60 degrees

  1. Fit the crankshaft pulley/vibration damper to the flange.

  1. Align the injection pump timing pulley and move the crankshaft to TDC position.
    1. Align the injection pump timing pulley by inserting the special tool through the cut-out in the timing pulley and the hole in the injection pump housing.
      • 1. Unscrew the blanking plug from the cylinder block.

      NOTE:
NOTE:The special tool must be screwed in as far as it will go, and the crankshaft must be resting against the timing pin.
    1. Screw the timing pin into the cylinder block.
    • Turn the crankshaft to TDC.

  1. NOTE:
NOTE:The running direction of the belt is marked. The slack side faces towards the timing belt tensioner. The bolts on the injection pump timing pulley must not be at the ends of the slots.
Fit the injection pump timing belt.
    1. Tighten the bolt of the injection pump timing belt tensioner.
    1. Tighten the bolts of the injection pump timing pulley.
