Removal

  1. Remove the engine upper cover.
    • Pull out the oil dipstick.
  1. Remove the battery. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.

  1. Detach the suspension strut covers on both sides.

  1. Undo the suspension strut top nut on both sides by four turns each.

  1. Pull out the plug of the mass air flow (MAF) sensor.

  1. Remove the air intake cleaner.
    1. Detach the intake air pipe from the front fender.
    1. Disconnect the vacuum hose from the intake air cleaner.
  1. Remove the subframe. For additional information, refer to Section  502-00 Uni-Body, Subframe and Mounting System.

  1. Remove the vacuum regulator solenoid valve.
    1. Disconnect the electrical connectors.
    1. Detach the vacuum hoses.
    1. Remove the retaining bolts.

  1. Detach the coolant pipe from the transaxle.

  1. Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Detach the left-hand halfshaft from the transmission using the special tools and secure it to one side.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.
    • Discard the snap ring from the drive halfshaft stub axle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Plug the transaxle to prevent oil loss and dirt ingress.
    Detach the right-hand halfshaft and intermediate shaft from the transmission and secure them to one side.
    • Discard the intermediate bearing cover and lock-nuts.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Detach the gearshift cables from the transaxle.
    1. Detach the shift cable (white) and selector cable (black) from the transmission linkage.
    1. Detach the cables from the retaining bracket, turning the abutment sleeves clockwise.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Install the special tools

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting nut.
    • Discard the nut.

  1. Detach the high-pressure pipe bracket from the rear engine mounting bracket.
    • Detach the charge air cooler pipe.

  1. Disconnect the plug of the reversing lamp switch.

  1. Remove the rear engine mounting bracket.

  1. Detach ground lead on transmission.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:If brake fluid is spilt on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed down with cold water.
    Detach the high-pressure pipe from the clutch slave cylinder.
    • Remove the spring clip.

  1. Remove the transmission upper retaining bolts.
  1. Lower the engine and transmission assembly using the special tools.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.
  1. Using a suitable transmission jack , support the transaxle.

  1. Remove the transmission right-hand retaining bolts.

  1. Remove the transmission left-hand retaining bolts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Secure the transmission on the transmission jack using retaining straps.
    Remove the transmission using a suitable transmission jack .
