About the Ranger

The Ranger arrived in 1982 as a 1983 model, replacing the Mazda-built Courier as Ford's compact pickup, and it was America's best-selling compact truck from 1987 to 2004. It was built in Louisville, Edison and St. Paul, and its chassis also underpinned the Bronco II and the first Explorers. The North American Ranger ended in 2012 and returned as a mid-size truck for 2019.

What these manuals cover

• 1983–1992 (first generation): the 2.0 and 2.3-litre Lima fours, the 2.8, 2.9 and (from 1990) 4.0-litre Cologne V6s, the 3.0-litre Vulcan V6, and diesels from Mazda and Mitsubishi.
• 1993–1997 (second generation): the 2.3 four, the 3.0 V6 and the 4.0 V6 shared with the Explorer.
• 1998–2010 (third generation): a 2.5-litre four until 2001, then a 2.3-litre DOHC four. The 3.0 V6 ran until 2008, and the 4.0 became an overhead-cam engine for 2001.
