Description and Operation
The fuel supply system of the Ford Scorpio '95 consists of a rear ‐ mounted steel fuel tank complete with an in tank sender unit (and fuel pump in the case of petrol variants) and a long ‐ life fuel filter. Diesel variants do not have in ‐ tank fuel pumps, but rely on the injection pump to draw fuel from the fuel tank. The fuel lines are metal except where they terminate in which case the pipes are plastic. All pipe connections are of the quick release type.
The fuel tank is fitted with a roll ‐ over valve which will prevent fuel leakage in the event of the vehicle being inverted.
The air cleaner assembly is made of plastic and has a disposable paper element. The lid of the air cleaner is retained by either quick release clips or screws. On petrol variants, the assembly is fixed to the vehicle by two rubber bands and a single screw retains the intake ducting. On diesel variants, the assembly is fixed to the vehicle by two bolts which pass through the inner fender and a single screw retains the intake ducting.
All petrol variants are fitted with a fuel shut ‐ off switch. In an accident or parking impact this switch will cut off the power to the fuel pump, thus reducing the risk of fire. The switch is located behind the trim panel in the rear of the luggage compartment.
