This procedure covers the seal and bearing replacement for steering gears. The steering gear uses one single lip seal and one double lip seal. Seals
may be replaced without removing the power steering gear.

The Special Service Tools (SSTs) required to to complete these procedures are a J 6278 pitman shaft bearing remover, a J 6219 pitman shaft oil
seal installer, and a J 4245 internal snap ring pliers.
PROCEDURE
1. Remove the pitman arm from the steering gear, then clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft (12) and housing (20) by using a wire brush to
clean the pitman shaft splines.
2. Remove the retaining ring (35) using the J 4245 tool.
NOTE: Use care not to score the housing bore when prying out seals and washers.
3. Detach the backup washer (33), and double lip seal (32) using a screwdriver to pry them from the housing (20).
4. Remove the needle bearing (28) by inserting the J 6278 tool through the hole in the top of the housing (20) and driving out the bearing (28).
NOTE: When reassembling,coat the double lip seal (32) and the washer (33) with grease.
5. After disassembling, inspect the parts then assemble in this order.
a. The needle bearing (28) to the housing (20) using the J 6278 tool.
b. The single lip seal (30) using the J 6219 tool.
c. The backup washer (33).
d. The retaining ring (35) using the J 4245 tool.
e. The pitman shaft and side cover.
6. After assembly, install the pitman arm to the steering gear.
