NOTE: The Special Service Tool (SST) tool required to complete these procedures is a J 21552 Rack Piston Arbor.
PROCEDURE
1. After removing the steering gear remove the pitman shaft and side cover.
2. Remove the housing end plug by turning the stub shaft counterclockwise until the rack piston (26) begins to come out of the housing (20).
3. Remove the rack piston plug (27) by inserting the J 21552 into bore of rack piston (26) and holding the J 21552 tightly against worm shaft while
turning the stub shaft counterclockwise. The rack piston (26) will be forced onto the J 21552 and hold the rack piston balls (25) in place.
4. Detach the rack piston (26), rack piston balls (25), and J 21552 together from the housing (20).
5. Remove the valve.
6. Remove the worm shaft (13).
7. remove the thrust bearing (16) and races (15 and 17).
8. Take the J 21552 tool from the rack piston (26) then remove the rack piston balls (25).
10. Take off the screws (21), clamp (22) and ball guide (23) then remove the teflon ring (5) and O-ring seal (6).
11. Clean and inspect all the disassembled parts and replace if necessary.
