REMOVAL
1. Remove the steering gear from vehicle.
2. Detach the pitman arm from the steering gear.
3. Rotate the stub shaft back and forth to drain power steering fluid.
4. Clean the exposed end of pitman shaft and housing using a wire brush to clean pitman shaft spline.
5. After doing this, remove the following components.
a. The adjuster lock nut.
b. Remove the bolts and rotate the stub shaft by using a 12-point socket, to the center gear.
c. Remove the pitman shaft from the side cover.
INSTALLATION
1. When installing the first thing to do is attach the pitman shaft (12) to side cover (7) by screwing the pitman shaft (12) in until it fully seats to side
cover (7).
2. Install the adjuster lock nut (8) noting not to tighten the adjuster lock nut (8) until after pitman shaft adjustment has been made.
3. Attach the gasket (11) to side cover (7) and bend tabs around edges of side cover (7).
4. Install the pitman shaft assembly and side cover (7) to housing (20) and tighten the bolts to 60 Nm (44 ft lbs).
5. Adjust the pitman shaft.
6. Install the steering gear.
Pitman Shaft Seal
REMOVAL
NOTE:

When removing the seal, mark the position of the pitman arm to the pitman shaft. Use the Special Service Tool (SST) J 4245 Internal Snap Ring
Pliers when removing the seal.

When removing the pitman shaft seal complete the following steps.
a. Remove the Pitman arm.
b. Remove the snap rings using the Special Service Tool (SST) J 4245 Internal Snap Ring Pliers, then position a drain pan under the steering
gear.
c. Start the engine then turn the steering wheel from stop to stop bouncing the wheel off the stops.
d. Next, remove the washers, single lip seal, and double lip seal, then turn off the engine.
e. Inspect the pitman shaft seal surfaces for roughness or pitting. If pitted, replace the shaft. Also check the housing for burrs and remove the
burrs before installing the new seals.

After completing the inspections clean the pitman shaft and seal areas using a crocus cloth.
