Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

Raise the vehicle and support it at the frame.

The hoist must remain under the rear axle housing.
1. Rear wheels and drums.
2. Lower shock absorber nuts and washers.
3. Shock absorbers from their anchor plates.
4. Bolts and retainers from the pinion flange.
IMPORTANT:

It is essential that the positions of all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles be observed and accurately reference
marked prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. All components
must be reassembled in the exact relationship to each other as they were when removed. Specifications and torque values, as well as any
measurements made prior to disassembly, must be followed.

Mark the propeller shaft and the pinion flange.

Secure the propeller shaft up and out of the way so as not to put unnecessary stress on the universal joints.
5. Brake lines at the axle housing.
6. Brake lines at the backing plates.
7. Propeller shaft.
8. Parking brake cable(s).
9. Nuts and washers.
10. U-bolts and anchor plates.
11. Vent hose from the axle housing, as follows:
a. Move the axle from above the springs.
b. Lower the axle from the vehicle using the hoist.
