Drive/Propeller Shaft: Service and Repair
Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement

REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

Raise the vehicle on a hoist.

IMPORTANT:  
-

It is essential that the positions of all driveline components relative to the propeller shaft and axles be observed and accurately reference
marked prior to disassembly. These components include the propeller shafts, drive axles, pinion flanges, output shafts, etc. All components
must be reassembled in the exact relationship to each other as they were when removed. Specifications and torque values, as well as any
measurements made prior to disassembly, must be followed.

Accurately reference mark the propeller shaft.

1. Bolts from rear of pinion flange.
2. Retainers.

IMPORTANT:  Do not pound on the original propeller shaft yoke ears. The injection joints may fracture. Never pry or place any tool between a
yoke and a universal joint.

3. Yoke and cross assembly.

Tape bearing cups to prevent the loss of bearing roller.

4. Propeller shaft.

-

Slide the propeller shaft forward.

-

Lower the propeller shaft and remove under the rear axle.

Do not allow the universal joint to incline greatly; the joint may fracture.

Clean

-

All parts with a suitable solvent.

Inspect

-

Outer diameter of nylon injected yoke for burrs. Any burring will damage the transmission seal.

For proper installation and uniform seating of the bearing cups.

-

Slip yoke splines for wear.

-

For twisted slip yoke splines or possibly the wrong universal joint. Replace parts as necessary.

INSTALL OR CONNECT

1. Propeller shaft into the transmission.

Lubricate slip joint.

IMPORTANT:  Install a new universal joint whenever a slip joint or companion flange is serviced.

2. Yoke and cross assembly onto the pinion flange.
