Differential Carrier: Service and Repair

1.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assemblies.

2.

Drain differential gear oil.

3.

Remove left and right stabilizer links, then front and rear lateral link assemblies.

4.

Using a pry bar, pry drive axle shafts from differential carrier. Do not pull on driveshaft assemblies. Do not allow driveshaft boots to come in
contact with any other components on the vehicle.

5.

Remove propeller shaft retaining bolts, then support propeller shaft out of way.

6.

Support differential carrier with jack, then remove two differential carrier retaining bolts.

7.

slightly lower differential carrier, then disconnect the breather hose at the top of the case.

8.

Remove retaining bolt at front of case, then lower differential case from vehicle.

9.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque front mounting bolt to 94 ft. lbs.
b. Torque rear mounting bolts to 48 ft. lbs.
c. Torque propeller shaft retaining bolts to 26 ft. lbs.
d. Torque lateral links to 116 ft. lbs.
e. Torque stabilizer links to 37 ft. lbs.
f.

Replace the copper washer on the drain plug with a new one, then torque plug to 58 ft. lbs.

g. Adjust vehicle trim height.
