Rear Bumper Assembly - Paint Staining

1998 RODEO (UE) REAR BUMPER ASSEMBLY PAINT STAINING

AFFECTED VEHICLES
1998 Rodeo (UE) models equipped with tailgate-mounted spare tire.

Some affected vehicles may experience staining on the rear bumper assembly paint. This staining appears on the vertical surface of the rear bumper
assembly, below the tailgate-mounted spare tire.

To repair this condition, sand the stained area(s) using fine grade abrasive paper and repaint the entire rear bumper assembly, using the procedure
described in this Service Bulletin.

1.

Remove the rear bumper assembly from the vehicle in accordance with page SF-6 of the 1998 Rodeo (UE) Workshop Manual
(UE098-WSM-L01).

2.

Wash the rear bumper assembly with soap and water; then, dry thoroughly.

3.

Clean the rear bumper assembly with a suitable grease and wax remover (e.g., PPG brand DX-330 Grease and Wax Remover, or equivalent).
When done, wipe down the rear bumper assembly with PPG brand DX-103 Multi-Prep, or equivalent.

4.

Mask off all areas not to be painted.

5.

Sand the stained area(s) using No. 400 grit abrasive paper until the stain(s) are completely removed.

6.

Sand the entire rear bumper assembly using No 600 grit abrasive paper; then, sand using a gray Scotchbrite pad with a suitable sanding paste (e a
PPG brand DX-101 Final Scuff Sanding Paste, or equivalent). When completed, rinse the rear bumper assembly and dry it thoroughly.

7.

Apply a single, light coat of primer (e.g., PPG brand DPX-801 Universal Plastics Primer, or equivalent) to any exposed plastic substrate.

8.

Finish using a flexible topcoat system (e.g., PPG brand Deltron or Concept Topcoat System, or equivalent) in accordance with the paint
manufacturer's instructions.

9.

Reinstall the rear bumper assembly in accordance with page 8F-6 of the Workshop Manual.

NOTE

If you sublet this repair, be sure to pro vide a copy of this Service Bulletin to the sublet facility (i.e., paint shop, body shop, etc.) This will ensure that
the repair is done to Isuzu quality standards, and labor charges are consistent with established flat rate time
