If all the criteria in step 1 are met, then replace torque converter (using appropriate part no. listed in Parts Information) as described in section 7A
of the appropriate workshop manual. If any of the criteria is not met, then perform General Diagnosis Procedure as described in section 7A of the
appropriate workshop manual and/or proceed to step 3.

If mileage is greater than 3,500 miles or transmission damage is suspected, then follow servicing instructions as stated in the following steps to
check the ATF fluid level and condition for color and contamination.

If the ATF fluid is red or light brown in color with no contamination, then continue to the proceeding steps described below (Go to step 5 if the
ATF fluid is dark brown in color with a burnt odor).

a.)

Clear code

b.)

Test-drive and review if any MIL codes sets.

c.)

If no codes are present, then release the vehicle to the customer.

If the fluid is dark brown in color with a burnt odor, this may indicate excessive fluid deterioration and signal a need for fluid change. Therefore
drain the transmission fluid and inspect for contamination (Go to step 6 if there are small pieces of foreign material present. Go to step 7 if large
pieces of metal or other foreign material are present).

If a small amount of foreign material is found on the bottom of the drain pan, then replace the transmission filter as described in the appropriate
workshop manual.

a.)

Remove adapter case oil pan to drain the remaining transmission fluid and main oil pan to change the transmission filter.

b.)

Once the transmission filter has been changed, flush the transmission cooler, reassemble both oil pans and fill with new ATF DEXRON(R)-III
through overfill screw of oil pan.

c.)

Clear any codes present and test-drive the vehicle.

d.)

If there are no codes present, then release the vehicle to the customer.

7.

If large pieces of metal or other foreign material are found on the bottom of the drain pan, then replace the transmission as described in the
appropriate workshop manual.

a.)

Replace the transmission assembly.

b.)

Flush the transmission cooler and cooler lines.

c.)

Add new ATF DEXRON(R)-III through overfill screw of oil pan.

d.)

Clear any codes present and test-drive the vehicle.

e.)

If there are no codes present, then release the vehicle to the customer.
