Air Bag: Service and Repair
Air Bag Module (Driver Side)
Removal and Installation
1. Disarm SRS as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove four retaining bolts from rear of steering wheel.
3. Disconnect module connector from clockspring assembly, then remove module from vehicle.
4. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
b. Hold module surface facing away, and connect blue, then the orange connectors.
c. Place module into wheel, and avoid pinching wiring.
d. Install four bolts, and torque to 10-12 ft. lbs.
e. Arm SRS and ensure air bag lamp lights for four to eight seconds, then goes off.
Precautions
When handling a deployed air bag assembly, a face shield and rubber gloves should be worn, since the module may contain deposits of
sodium hydroxide. Vehicle interior and HVAC ducts should be vacuumed. If sinus or throat irritation is encountered during air bag
replacement, exit vehicle and breathe fresh air. If skin becomes irritated, flush affected area with cool water. If any irritations continue,
consult a physician. Wash hands and rinse thoroughly with water after handling air bag assemblies.
If an air bag module inflator ruptures without deployment, exposing people to the propellants by ingestion, then vomiting must be induced. In
cases of eye contact, flush the eyes with water for at least 15 minutes. Fresh air will be needed in cases of inhalation. Always seek medical
attention after these initial first aid treatments.
A deployed air bag unit should be removed as outlined under Air Bag Unit. After removal, it should be sealed securely in a heavy duty plastic bag,
then placed with automotive scrap.
Before a vehicle is scrapped, the live air bag module must be deployed. Never dispose of a live air bag module.
Review the following precautions prior to performing the air bag module deployment procedure.
1. Deployment must be done in a safe, open space with no strong winds or breezes.
2. Wear rubber gloves and safety glasses when handling an air bag module.
3. Use deployment tool No. K95U-6000-BDY, or equivalent, when deploying module. Stand at least 20 feet away from module during
deployment to protect hearing.
4. Do not touch module for 30 minutes after deployment. Wait until it has cooled.
5. Do not cool module using water.
6. Place module in heavy duty plastic bag, then seal and place with automotive scrap.
7. Wash hands after handing deployed air bag module.
Air Bag Module Deployment
1. Disarm SRS as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Remove module from vehicle.
3. Locate module facing upward in a safe, open space with no strong winds or breezes.
4. Connect deployment tool No. K95U-6000-BDY, or equivalent, to module connector.
5. Move tool at least 20 ft. away from module.
6. Connect tool to a fully charged 12 volt battery (red lead to positive, black to negative), and ensure green lamp is lit.
7. Clear all persons, animals and objects from area within 20 feet of module.
