Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

The clockspring is part of the combination switch assembly and is not serviced as a separate unit.

1. Disarm SRS as outlined under Technician Safety Information.
2. Ensure front wheels are in straight-ahead position.
3. Remove driver air bag module.
4. Mark steering wheel and shaft to ease installation, then remove wheel nut.
5. Use suitable puller and remove wheel.
6. Remove three combination switch screws.
7. Disconnect connectors, then remove switch.

INSTALLATION

An alignment pin is supplied with a replacement combination switch assembly, but a substitute pin will be needed when aligning an original. This
pin should be 0.12 inch in diameter, and at least three inches long.

1. If front wheels were moved from straight-ahead position, temporarily install steering wheel and set them straight again.
2. Install combination switch. Torque screws to one ft. lb.
3. Rotate clockspring connector center portion clockwise until it stops.
4. Rotate center portion counterclockwise 2 3/4 turns, and align center decal arrow with housing arrow.
5. Hold arrows in aligned position, and insert pin into center portion front face hole until it engages in hole located on back side of housing.

Insertion depth is approximately 7/8 inch.

Install steering wheel with nut finger tight. The alignment pin passes through oblong hole in wheel above shaft hole.

7. Remove pin, then torque nut to 29-36 ft. lbs.
8. Hold air bag module surface facing away, and connect blue, then the orange connectors. Install module, and torque bolts to 10-12 ft. lbs.
9. Arm SRS and ensure air bag lamp lights for four to eight seconds, then goes off.
