Oil leaks - Diagnostic procedure
OPERATIONS IN NETWORK
If the Customer reports oil leaks, before carrying out any repair operation, carry out diagnostic procedure no. 41012 described below which contains the instructions already published in Service news 8/97 - subject 41.05.97 but in a new format.
This procedure makes it possible to identify the defective component accurately without having to replace any components unnecessarily;
The fault diagnosis carried out in this way should be entered under SIGI code 4120 1 031 EM for which there is a time allowance of 0.40 hours.
For all operations mentioned in the diagnostic procedure, refer to the Service Manual and the Flat Rate Manual.
For the Italian market, if carrying out the diagnostic procedure involves replacing the power assisted steering, the component removed should be sent to GEMCA accompanied by a copy of the page from the procedure with the Step that has led to the replacement operation. Replacement of power assisted steering systems that do not have documentation will not be recognized under the terms of the warranty.
When carrying out the diagnostic procedure, at the end of each operation check whether the action taken has solved the problem and whether the symptom is no longer present. In this case the diagnostic procedure is over and has led to the problem being identified and solved. If this is not the case, the fault is still present and it is therefore necessary to continue with the diagnostic procedure starting again from the Step indicated in 'All OK.
Diagnostic Procedure 41012 | Power assisted steering system: Oil leaks and/or low oil level |
| Symptom/Conditions:The Customer reports that the oil level in the power assisted steering fluid reservoir is too low or complains of oil leaks (red oil on the ground), the frequent decrease in the oil level in the power assisted steering fluid reservoir and consequently noise from the system and/or hardening of the steering |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Results of the tests | ||||
| Step | Operation to be carried out | |||
| 1 | POWER ASSISTED STEERING FLUID RESERVOIR OIL LEVEL CHECK | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
| Check that the fluid level in the power assisted steering fluid reservoir is correct and that it has not been topped up previously by the Customer. | The level is low | Top up to the correct level and move on to step 2 | ||
| The level is correct but it has been topped up previously by the customer | Move on to Step 2 | |||
| 2 | POWER ASSISTED STEERING FLUID LEAKS CHECK | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
| Check that there are no power assisted steering fluid leaks visible from the outside, making sure that the oil level in the previous checks was not low | Power assisted steering fluid (red) leak visible from the outside | Move on to step 3 | ||
| There are no leaks visible from the outside but the fluid level in the reservoir has decreased frequently | Move on to Step 7 | |||
| There are no visible leaks and the fluid level was only too low the first time it was checked | Only top up the fluid level in the power assisted steering fluid reservoir | |||
| 3 | POWER ASSISTED STEERING SYSTEM FLUID LEAKS CHECK | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
Check (using talcum powder) that there are no fluid leaks from the power assisted steering fluid system hydraulic circuit, in particular from the: - pipes/connectors between the power assisted steering system pump and reservoir - coil, if present | Move on to Step 4 | Leaks detected | Replace the damaged pipes and renew the correct fastening (always replace the seals) | |
| 4 | CHECK FOR FLUID LEAKDS FROM THE RIGID POWER ASSISTED STEERING FLUID SYSTEM PIPES | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
| Check that there are no fluid leaks from the rigid pipes on the power assisted steering box and attachments | Move on to Step 5 | Leaks detected | Replace the power assisted steering box | |
| 5 | CHECK FOR FLUID LEAKS FROM THE POWER STEERING/PUMP JOINS | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
Check (using talcum powder) that there are no leaks/seepage from the power assisted steering box or pump joins due to porousness; check the condition of the reservoir | Move on toStep 6 | Leaks detected | Replace the defective component | |
| 6 | CHECK FOR OIL AND GREASE LEAKS | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
| Check that there are no fluid leaks from the power assisted steering box valve lower plug | Move on to Step 7 | Oil leaks detected (red) | Replace the power assisted steering box | |
| Grease leaks detected (yellow) | Eliminate the leaks using appropriate sealant | |||
| 7 | CHECK FOR OIL LEAKS IN THE AREA WHERE THE POWER ASSISTED STEERING SYSTEM/STEERING COLUMN ARE JOINED | All OK | Problems found | Operation |
| Check that there are no oil leaks from the power assisted steering box near the steering column | Leaks detected | Replace the power assisted steering box | ||
| There are no leaks but the fluid level in the reservoir decreases frequently and there is oil on the steering box boots | Replace the power assisted steering box | |||
