Fuel gauge
The fuel gauge is controlled by a signal from the float operated sender unit in the fuel tank. A green/black wire connects the instrument pack (C230-13) to the sender unit (C114-3). The sender unit (C114-4) is earthed through earth header joint (C551-3) by a black wire. Movement of the sender unit float arm varies the electrical resistance across the sender unit, so the voltage of the control signal and the resultant deflection of the gauge pointer are directly related to the level of fuel in the tank.
Tachometer
The tachometer uses an engine speed signal received by the instrument pack (C233-14) from the ignition coil (C156-1) (petrol models) or ECM (C159-25) (diesel models) on a white/black wire. The speed signal is translated into engine speed by the tachometer.
Seat belt warning lamp (Australia and Japan only)
The seat belt warning lamp illuminates at the beginning of each ignition cycle as a reminder to fasten seat belts. When the ignition switch is set to position II (on), the Central Control Unit (CCU) (C593-J) connects the red/purple wire, between the instrument pack (C230-8) and the passenger compartment fuse box (C589-8), to earth (not shown) for approximately 5 seconds.
Door open warning lamp
While the ignition is on, the door open warning lamp will be illuminated if the bonnet or any of the doors are open. The CCU (C593-F) connects the purple/black wire, between the instrument pack (C233-3) and the passenger compartment fuse box (C589-6), to earth for the duration that the bonnet or door is open.
