Alignment: Service and Repair
Preliminary Checks
CAUTION:Do not attempt to adjust front wheel alignment without first making a preliminary inspection of front suspension parts and making
repairs where necessary.
1. Position vehicle on level ground. Remove all passengers and load.
2. Remove excess accumulation of mud, dirt, or other deposits from chassis and underbody.
3. Check tire inflation and set to recommended pressure. Check that tire sizes are comparable to original equipment and that front tires have same ply
rating and load range.
4. Check that spare tire, jack, and tools are in designated positions.
5. Check that fuel and fluid levels are full.
6. Inspect front wheel bearing play. Adjust and/or replace bearings if needed.
7. Inspect wheel and tire runout.
8. Check that steering linkage and radius arms are not bent or damaged. Replace parts if necessary.
9. Inspect bushings at radius arm-to-frame attachment for wear or looseness. Replace bushings if necessary.
10. Inspect ball joints for excessive wear and looseness.
11. Check steering gear mounting bolts and tighten to specified torque.
12. Check all other suspension components for damage or looseness.
13. Bounce vehicle to check shock absorber operation.
14. Difference in height between left and right sides (measured from wheel center to fender rim) must not exceed 0.63 in (16 mm) for front wheels; 0.79
in (20 mm) for rear wheels; 0.79 in (20 mm) for rear end of pickup box.
