Steering Gear: Service and Repair

REMOVAL 

1. Place the front wheels in the straight ahead position. Do not lock the steering column.
2. Raise the vehicle.
3. Remove the wheel and tire assemblies.

4. Remove the four air deflector retaining screws.

5. Pull downward on the air deflector to disengage the retaining pins.
6. Disconnect the tie rod ends.

(1) Remove and discard the cotter pins.
(2) Remove the castellated nuts.
(3) Disconnect the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.

CAUTION:  Do not damage the tie rod end boot seals.

7. Loosen the LH tie rod jam nut. Remove the LH tie rod end.

(1) Count and record the number of turns required to remove the tie rod end.

8. Remove the sway bar links.

9. Remove sway bar mounting brackets and the sway bar.

(1) Note or mark the driver side end of the sway bar for correct orientation on assembly.

10. Remove the power steering fluid cooler to cross member retaining nuts.
