Extension Housing: Service and Repair
EXTENSION HOUSING REMOVAL/ INSTALLATION
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support the vehicle.
3. On 4x4 vehicles, remove the transfer case.
4. Drain the transmission fluid.
NOTE: To maintain initial propeller shaft balance, mark the propeller shaft centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange so they may
be installed in their original positions.
5. Mark the propeller centering socket yoke and rear axle universal joint flange.
6. Remove and support the rear propeller shaft.
7. Use a transmission jack to support the transmission.
8. Remove the transmission mount to cross-member nuts.
9. Remove the crossmember.
10. Remove the transmission bolt and reposition the exhaust bracket.
11. Remove the exhaust inlet cross over pipe.
12. Lower the transmission to access the extension housing bolts.
13. Use Special Service Tool (SST) T74P-77248-A or equivalent to remove the extension housing rear oil seal.
