Steering Gear: Service and Repair
With 4 Wheel Steering

Front Steering Gear

1.

Raise and support vehicle and remove front steering gear in numerical order, Fig. 5, noting the following:
a. Use tool 49-0118850C or equivalent to disconnect tie rod ends from knuckles.
b. After removing mounting bolts and nuts from body and crossmember, let lower members hang down.

Inspect steering gear for damaged or cracked case and the linkage for bending, replacing steering gear assembly as necessary.

3.

Check pipes for clogging, bending or pinching, replacing as necessary.

4.

Inspect mounting bracket and rubber for damage, replacing as necessary.

5.

Check boots for cracks, damage or deterioration, replacing as necessary.

6.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque universal joint to pinion shaft attaching bolt to 13-20 ft. lbs.
b. Torque subframe attaching bolts and nuts to 27-40 ft. lbs.

7.

After completing installation, adjust rear turning angle.
