DESCRIPTION

Some Tributes may exhibit an airbag lamp illuminated and Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) B1877, B1881 for the SRS pretensioner system.

This may be caused by a variation in the electrical continuity between the body-side connector and the component-side connector containing seat belt
buckle and pretensioner wiring.

Customers having this concern should have their vehicles repaired using the following procedure.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

This service bulletin adds supplementary explanation to the instructions enclosed in the service repair kit parts package.

This repair procedure is specifically for this Service Bulletin only.

The soldering must be performed by skilled technicians who are appointed by the dealer service manager.

NOTE: 

Install a replacement harness connector kit on BOTH the driver and passenger seat belt buckle pretensioners, even if the DTC is present for only one
side. The kit includes improved connector halves to replace the existing connectors on both the body harness and the safety belt buckle pretensioner.
One kit is required per side (2 kits per vehicle). Refer CAREFULLY to the instruction sheet included in the kit for complete repair procedure.

Before performing this repair, review all Workshop Manual safety WARNINGS and NOTES related to diagnosis and repair of the supplemental
restraint system (SRS), including those discussed below. If DTCs other than those noted above are observed, consult the Workshop Manual for
diagnostic procedures.

1.

Confirm the codes using WDS.

2.

Record all radio station presets so you can re-program customer preferences after repairs are completed.

WARNING:

The seat belt pretensioner is a pyrotechnic device. Always wear safety glasses when repairing an air bag equipped vehicle and when handling a
safety belt buckle pretensioner or seat belt retractor pretensioner. Never probe a pretensioner electrical connector. Doing so could result in
pretensioner or air bag deployment and could result in personal injury.

To avoid accidental deployment and possible personal injury, the air bag backup power supply must be carefully depleted using steps # )3-5
before performing the repairs described in this Service Bulletin.

Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.

At the Central Junction Box (CJB), located below the left side of the instrument panel, remove the cover and the Restraints Control Module
(RCM) fuses # )5 (5A) and # )7 (10A) from the CJB. For additional information, refer to the appropriate model year WSM and Wiring Diagram.

5.

Disconnect the battery negative cable and wait one minute. Be sure to disconnect auxiliary batteries and power supplies (if equipped).
