BELT TENSION

1. Use a belt tension gauge to check that the belt tensioner is at the standard value at a point half way between the two pulleys (indicated by an arrow

in the illustration). In addition, press this section with a force of 98 N (22 lbs.) and check that the amount of belt deflection is at the standard value.
Standard Values
Tension:

When Checked:  392 - 490 N (88 - 110 lbs.)
When A New Belt Is Installed:   539 - 637 N (121 - 143 lbs.)
When A Used Belt Is Installed:  392 - 490 N (88 - 110 lbs.)

Deflection (Reference Value)

When Checked:  5.6 - 6.4 mm (0.22 - 0.26 inch)
When A New Belt Is Installed:  4.3 - 5.1 mm (0.17 - 0.20 inch)
When A Used Belt Is Installed: 5.6 - 6.4 mm (0.22 - 0.26 inch) 

2. If the tension or deflection is outside the standard value, adjust by the following procedure. 

a. Loosen the tension pulley fixing nut. 
b. Adjust belt tension with the adjusting bolt. 
c. Tighten the fixing nut.

NOTE:  Check after turning the crankshaft once or more clockwise.

d. Check the belt deflection amount and tension, and readjust if necessary.
