Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove wheel and speed sensor.

2.

Disconnect parking brake cable from caliper.

3.

Remove caliper retaining bolts from arm and suspend caliper to one side with wire.

4.

Remove brake rotor, cap and nut.

5.

Remove hub/wheel bearing, inner race, washer and seal. Retain washer for installation. Use a suitable slide hammer to remove hub.

Installation

The hub/wheel bearing is a factory-assembled unit.

Install a new seal with face against seal driver tool No. 0530-D or equivalent, Fig. 1. Place assembly on spindle and tap with a mallet until seated.

2.

Install bearing inner race on the spindle with a nut and two rings No. 0530-E or equivalent. Remove nut and rings.

3.

Install hub/wheel bearing with inner race, washer, new nut and tighten to specifications, then lock the nut.

4.

Install a new cap, wheel sensors where necessary, disc brake and brake caliper. Coat two bolts with Loctite and tighten to specifications.

5.

Connect parking brake cable and replace wheel.
