The cruise control system can be cancelled by turning the main cruise switch OFF. This removes the supply voltage to the cruise control unit and erases the set speed from the system memory. The cruise control system can also be temporarily disabled by depressing the brake pedal (and clutch pedal for vehicles fitted with manual gearboxes). For vehicles fitted with automatic gearboxes, the cruise system will also be temporarily disabled if the gear selector is moved out of D4, D3, or 2. When the cruise system has been disabled by the brake, clutch, or automatic inhibitor switch, the set speed is kept in the system memory. If the vehicle speed is still above 30 mph (45 km/h) and the RESUME switch is depressed, the vehicle will automatically return to the previously set speed. During cruise control operation, gradual acceleration without depressing the accelerator pedal can be achieved. When the RESUME switch is depressed and held down, an acceleration signal is sent to the cruise control unit , and the vehicle will accelerate. When the desired speed is reached the RESUME switch is released and the new speed is set. Likewise, gradual deceleration can also be achieved. When the SET switch is depressed and held down, a deceleration signal is sent to the cruise control unit, and the vehicle will decelerate. When the desired speed is reached the SET switch is released and the new speed is set.
Electrical Description
Main Cruise Switch
With the ignition switch ON , voltage is applied to the main cruise switch on the B/Y wire from fuse 4 of the passenger compartment fuse box. When the main cruise switch is depressed, voltage is applied to the cruise control unit and the brake lamp switch on the LG wire to turn on the cruise control system. When the main cruise switch is depressed, voltage is also applied to its internal telltale bulb and the bulb will light.
Set/Resume Switch
Voltage is applied at all times to the set/resume switch via the W/Y wire, horn relay, U/R wire and the rotary coupler. When the SET switch is depressed a voltage signal is sent to the cruise control unit on the LG/R wire. When the RESUME switch is depressed a voltage signal is sent to the cruise control unit on the LG/B wire.
