Differential: Adjust
Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Socket -T20020-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T20133-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Tappet -T20134-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Kit (case) -U-40200A-
t  Kit (case) -U-40300-

It is necessary to readjust the differential when the following components are renewed:
t  Gearbox
t  clutch housing
t  Differential casing
t  Tapered roller bearings for differential

–  Insert the conical roller bearing outer ring -A- (on the side of the drive pinion) with an S1 shim (always 1 mm) in the gearbox casing.
  Note
Inner and outer tapered roller bearing races are paired. Do not mix them up when fitting.
  E39-0180
–  Insert the outer ring of the conical roller bearing into the clutch housing. Do not fit any shim.
–  Insert differential in gearbox housing.
–  Fit the clutch housing on the gearbox and tighten the 5 bolts to the corresponding torque.
  E39-0181
–  Fit the measurement and gauge (measurement range 3 mm, gauge extension -A- of about 30 mm).
–  Adjust the dial gauge to „0“ with a pre-tension of 1 mm.
–  Move the differential up and down, read the play in the gauge and note it. (Example: 1.50 mm) is located behind the plug.
S2 shim thickness
The specified bearing preload is obtained by adding a constant value for preload (0.35 mm) to the reading obtained.
Example:
  E39-0189
Average value1.50 mm
+ Pressure value (const. value)0.35 mm
S2 shim thickness1.85 mm

–  Remove the clutch housing and release the outer ring of the conical roller bearing.

–  Fit the S2 shim of corresponding thickness (for this example 1.85 mm) and reinsert the outer ring of the conical bearing into the clutch housing.
The following shims are used:
  E39-0181
Thickness (mm)Original part number
0,65 → Spare parts catalogue
0,70

0,85
0,90
0,95
1,00
1,05
1,10
1,15
1,20
1,25

The various thicknesses make it possible to achieve the exact shim thickness required.
If the size of the shim required is larger than those listed in the table, install two shims amounting to the correct value.
–  Fit on the clutch housing and tighten the bolts with the corresponding torque.
