Calculating the “i” reduction ratio
Calculating the “i” reduction ratio
The reduction ratio between two pinions is obtained by dividing the number of cogs on the pinion driven by the number of cogs on the drive pinion.
Example:

 5th gearTapered unit
Drive pinion (primary)47 ( Z primary)15 (Z Pinion)
Driven pinion (secondary)40 (Z secondary)64 (Z Crown)

Hence the following may be found:
lg = Reduction ratio in a gear
lg =
Z Secondary
Z Primary
=
40
47
= 0,851
Ia = reduction ratio for the cone unit
Ia =
Z Crown
Z Sprocket
=
64
15
= 4,267
ltotal = Total reduction ratio
This is obtained by multiplying the reduction ratio of the highest gear by that of the tapered unit.
Itotal = Ig x la = 0,851 x 4,267 = 3,631
