Checking function of freewheel lock
Checking function of freewheel lock
l  A second mechanic is required to test freewheel lock.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Run engine for about 30 seconds to develop vacuum for control element.
–  Engage reverse gear.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Switch on ignition.
–  Turn rear wheels forwards and backwards.
The front wheels must be driven in both directions by the propshaft.
When wheels are turned forwards, the freewheel lock engages audibly immediately.
If rear wheels can be turned forwards without resistance, the following defects could be the cause:
Pneumatic system:
t  Lines, hoses and connections
t  Non-return valve and vacuum reservoir (in engine compartment)
–  Check for leaks using hand-operated vacuum pump -V.A.G 1390-.
t  Diaphragm in control unit
Electrical system:
–  Check wiring and components for short circuit and open circuit using current flow diagram.
–  Check solenoid switch in control element (must pull audibly when ignition is switched on).
If pneumatic and electrical systems are OK, then the mechanical freewheel lock or the freewheel itself must be defective. To repair, dismantle rear final drive → Chapter.
